Kids coming back from soccer and covering your carpets with grass stains? Finished a nice afternoon of gardening and taken some of the greenery into your home with you by accident? Grass stains have a way of showing up on your floors even if you take every precaution beforehand.

Grass stains act as a pigment that dyes any surface it touches. Grass contains chlorophyll, which is a green pigment that bonds with most materials it comes into contact with. This makes removing these stains a challenge. It’s best to deal with these stains as soon as you notice them. Don’t allow the grass to set into your carpet! Try the following tricks in this order to remove the green from your carpet:

Vacuum Suction Tool

Target the grass stain and vacuum the area using a suction tool. Make sure not to use a tool with a brush, as that will just set the stain deeper into the carpet. The suction tool should do a good job of removing the parts of the stain that haven’t already set into the carpet. Getting out the rest will require a little elbow grease.

Wet Clean Cloth

Find a clean white cloth. Wet the cloth with warm water and blot the grass stain. Start from the outside of the stain and work your way in. Using a white cloth is important because you’ll be able to tell if you are making any progress by looking at how green your cloth becomes.

Mild Dish Soap

A mild dish soap is one that has a neutral pH level. Any dish soap labelled as mild, gentle, or safe for hands will do. Apply a small amount of dish soap directly onto the grass stain. Blot the stain using another clean white cloth. Again, start from the outside of the affected area and work your way in. Blot the carpet dry with a clean towel.

Vinegar

Take equal parts warm water and plain white vinegar and mix them together. Dampen a clean white cloth with the formula and blot the grass stain. Work your way in from the outside. Dry the affected area with a clean towel.
