Delamination is one of the more serious problems you can confront when you own carpet. Carpet delamination occurs when the secondary backing of the carpet starts to separate from the primary back or the bottom of the carpet fibres. Delamination can be spotted early on if you start to see a lot of wrinkles and bunching in your carpet that can’t be re-stretched or pushed down.

Here are some common causes for carpet delamination that are easily preventable:

Don’t Clean With Excessive Water

Carpet cleaning rental machines and steam cleaners require an excessive amount of water to clean your carpet. Exposing your carpet to too much water can cause damage. This is especially true if all of the water is not removed with the suction of the equipment being used, which is a common problem. Water left behind can cause delamination along with mould and soiling.

Don’t Soak With Harsh Chemicals

It’s important to know that blotting is your friend when dealing with carpet stains. When cleaning stains, take a small amount of the recommended solution, dab a cloth in it and lightly blot the stain. Start from the inside of the stain and slowly work your way in. Dry the rea with a towel once you are done. Even a small amount of moisture could seep its way down through the carpet to the backing.

Never scrub or soak a stain in harsh chemicals. If poured, solvents can seep into the adhesive agent between the backings and start breaking down the adhesion.

Limit Heavy Traffic

Heavy traffic areas in your home are prone to delamination due to overuse. Try to limit the traffic in areas of your home by rearranging furniture and creating new travel paths. You can also place area rugs throughout your home to take some of the stress off of your carpet.

Housetrain Your Pets

Be sure to housetrain your pets as soon as possible. Pet urine is the most damaging liquid to carpet. Urine immediately seeps into the backing and padding of carpet and can delaminate the carpet in a short period of time if not addressed quickly.
