We all know that having carpet in your home requires lots of care, maintenance, and patience. There will always be a time when you have to get your carpet cleaned professionally, or put up with lots of scrubbing on your own part. But, eventually, there comes a time when your beloved carpet needs to be replaced. If you aren’t quite sure whether you should stick to the one you have or have it replaced, then here are five important signs that it’s time to replace your carpet.

YOUR CARPETS ARE STAINED

Throughout day-to-day life, little accidents occur that put your carpet’s condition at risk. Small spills create stains that are often difficult, if not impossible, to remove. If your carpet has several of these – or even one big one somewhere – you might want to think about having that spot repaired. If you’ve had your carpet for a good few years and have tried everything to remove the stains, unsuccessfully, then it may be time to wave goodbye. It all depends on when you catch the problem, since some stains can become larger over time.

YOUR CARPETS AND RUGS ARE WORN AND TORN

A good rug or ample carpeting can last for years, but with that lifespan comes lots of wear and tear. Eventually, your rugs and carpets will start to show thin or bald spots, fraying, or even develop holes. Even if you get the carpet cleaned by the best company around, the carpet is already damaged, and there’s no fixing that – so the most cost-effective thing to do would be to invest in a new carpet. Instead of letting things get out of hand, simply have your rugs and carpets repaired or replace them with something fresh and new.

YOUR CARPET STINKS

You’d be surprised at just how many people have a lingering odour in their homes, and don’t realize that the carpet is the culprit. Most of the time, after a good clean, the carpet will stop smelling bad, but if it doesn’t, then this is a sure sign that you should replace your carpet. When the odour remains, this is because it has penetrated deep into the fibres of the carpet.

YOU’VE HAD IT FOR MORE THAN 10 YEARS

The majority of carpet manufacturers say that a carpet can last ten years with good care, so if you’ve had yours for longer than this, it’s probably worth thinking about replacing it. After this time, carpets begin to lose their tuft and texture and will require much more professional cleaning. This simply isn’t worth it financially, so getting a new carpet in perfect condition would be the most sensible thing to do.

YOU’RE GETTING ALLERGIC REACTIONS

The older a carpet is, the more likely you are to have bouts of allergic reactions and symptoms. This is because old carpets tend to pick up more dust and allergens, which can cause you to have an array of unpleasant symptoms. This is especially true if you have a pet. Obviously, this simply isn’t worth it, and if this is the case, then it’s time to get a new carpet.

YOUR CARPET PADDING IS DEPLETED

Aside from simple wear and tear, the padding that lies beneath your carpets or your rugs may flatten after a while. Nothing is more attractive or inviting than nice, fluffy rugs and soft, padded carpeting. Try not to forget about this when checking for signs that your items need to be repaired or replaced.

YOUR CARPET IS OUTDATED

New interior design concepts emerge every year, so you want to stay on top of things. While following each and every trend is not always feasible, it’s usually affordable to replace your carpets and rugs at the turn of every decade at least. In other words, it may be time for you to get rid of that 70s ambience in your home if you still have shag carpeting.
